Take Action: Stop the Anti-Immigrant Bill, SB 153
After the Governor has already VETOED SB 153, North Carolina legislators are STILL attempting to pass SB 153, a bill that would further criminalize immigrants and harm our communities. This dangerous legislation seeks to expand local law enforcement’s role in immigration enforcement, increasing the risk of racial profiling and tearing families apart. We must stop SB 153 from becoming law to protect immigrant families, ensure community safety, and stand against policies that encourage discrimination and fear.

SB 153 in North Carolina isn't about "safety," it's a tool to spread fear and divide our communities. SB 153 would require the Department of Public Safety, the Department of Adult Corrections, the State Highway Patrol, and the Bureau of Investigation to enter into a 287(g) agreement with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The bill would require these departments to determine whether the person they are interacting with is a U.S. citizen or has legal immigration status. If the person's immigration status cannot be determined, ICE must be contacted. If the person is undocumented, the agencies must cooperate with ICE requests.

La SB 153 en Carolina del Norte no se centra en la "seguridad", sino en sembrar el miedo y dividir a nuestras comunidades. La SB 153 exigiría que el Departamento de Seguridad Pública, el Departamento de Correccionales para Adultos, la Patrulla Estatal de Carreteras y la Oficina de Investigación firmen un acuerdo 287(g) con el Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas (ICE). El proyecto de ley exigiría a estos departamentos determinar si la persona con la que interactúan es ciudadana estadounidense o tiene estatus migratorio legal.
