The Ascent by Rahimah Adan

The day they rose above

What a beautiful day that was

The weight of this world

Loosened its grip

So they flew into lands of honey

That housed laughter so sweet

It could heal

To be the children basking

under the protection of Khalil-Allah

Who when thrown into a screeching blaze

Was enveloped by cool

To be the children

Exploring lush gardens

Snug within eternal comfort

From their Lord

And so they soared

Their feet lifting above the fray

Into an eternity so vast

Away from the confines of rubble

And shrieks of bombardment

Into the silence of space

Where stars glittered like streetlights

Illuminating their way

Home

And what about the people abandoned in their lands

Their earthly homes exchanged

For palaces standing firm

laughing amongst one another

Warm cups of tea in hand

Remembering tears shed over a life so finite

Now, forever in paradise

If you could see them rise

With their smiles unwavering

And bodies rejoicing

Sparkling like rivers of sapphire

From now into forever

If you could see them rise

You’d know freedom

Awaits

A Note from the Author

The Ascent is a poem about the ease that awaits during times of hardship. It is for those who have had to endure oppression in a world that too often looks the other way.
