Ms. BECOMES Mrs. YET Mr. REMAINS Mr. ?
I fail to understand this concept. Why is it fine? Why should I say “it is what it is” and look the other way?
Dear world — let’s either add a title for a married man, or get rid of “Mrs.” entirely.
Patriarchy has such deep roots, that we accept horrendous things without thinking twice. A woman should be proud to be called “Mrs.” — as if marriage is an achievement. As if the man now owns her and declares to the world: she belongs to me. Yet a woman has no reciprocal claim over the man’s identity. In social circles he remains Mr., the playground completely open — unless specifically asked about marital status. Yet a woman is introduced as Mrs. Not Miss. Not Ms.
Just… Mrs.
Oh dear, dear world. Yes. I am absolutely MAD to bring up stuff that no one else does and blow the trumpet to face the wrath.
